Hannibal Store Celebrates One Year!

Who knew we would be opening our store in a pandemic?

Who knew we would be opening our Hannibal store in a global pandemic! When we started the buildout of the new store COVID was just making news globally and no one had any idea of the impact it would have on everything. Some folks asked us if we would postpone the opening, but after we saw the need for some of our essential baking supplies and other grocery items we continued full steam ahead. We were happy to be able to supply these items to many people that may not have otherwise had access to them. Our team stepped up and really did great work during a very complicated time.

Hannibal, Missouri is a special place. There is no doubt about it. The amount of history in the town, the number of visitors coming in to explore it, and the close-knit community downtown, make it the perfect fit for a Dutch Country General Store. We love being a part of it all! Hannibal is filled to the brim with warm and wonderful people.

The Sky is the limit for Dutch Country General Store

We always say that the sky is the limit and it's true. We have many exciting plans to keep building the company and bringing our special Dutch Country Way to more of the country. Our catalog keeps growing and our website is always busy. People like to enjoy the simpler things in life, and we want to keep bringing a slice of that to them.

We are always rolling out new products and working with new partners with our merchandise. We have some exciting new wood toys produced by a fine company out of Vermont that are coming to stores soon. We also just added Timber Ridge snack sticks and jerky to our line-up. They use locally sourced beef from the pastures of central Iowa to produce a more nutritious and healthy snack than most jerky companies. And we are just now rolling out a new line of baby gifts - perfect for all those baby showers coming up! (Did I mention my wife is having our fifth child any day now?)

As I think back on the last year, one of my favorite experiences was opening day last April. I always get excited when the first customers walk through the door and we get to see the first "WOW" from them. It's a payoff for the hours and hours of hard work that it takes to get there. I also had a great time at our official grand opening event - the tractor parade was really neat and I always enjoy judging our Dutch Country Kitchen baking contest! We can't wait for more events to come in 2021, in April we will be having Levi's Crazy Days, so keep an eye out for all of those crazy deals. We hope to see ya real soon!

First, I want to thank you for your great support through a unique and unprecedented year. As we all can agree, nothing about 2020 has been normal, but we appreciate, from the bottom of our hearts, the kindness you’ve expressed. We also appreciate all the orders, via phone, mail, and online, that you’ve placed with us. You have kept us ticking in this most unusual time. We are forever grateful.

Amidst all the new adventures this year, we were still honored to be able to open our newest location of Dutch Country General Store in historic Hannibal, Missouri last April. We feel very blessed to have our new store located in downtown alongside the many other stores of “America’s Hometown”. If you haven’t visited Hannibal, be sure to add it to your list for 2021! Alongside our grand opening celebration, we also celebrated 8 years at our flagship store in Bloomfield, Iowa. It’s been an honor serving the area and we look forward to many more glorious years.

Giving Back to our Communities

As with every year, we feel that giving back to our community is one of our most important jobs. This year, with the pandemic happening, we were elated to donate 300 fresh baked cinnamon rolls to the Buddy Pack Program for the Hannibal Alliance for Youth Success and Hannibal Public School District #60. The program is amazing and feeds hundreds of kids in the area. During times like these, it’s important we do what we can for others - we were humbled to be a part of the efforts.

We also donated to various other organizations during the year, including the Salvation Army Food Bank, the iCare Program, the Great River Honor Flight, Wreaths Across America, Shop with a Cop, Hannibal Arts Council, and many more. We even sponsored video calls with Santa!

We Launched our Summer & Holiday Catalogs

Earlier in the year we also launched our premiere catalog and we were very happy to hear that you enjoyed it. And now, it’s Christmas and we were graciously able to launch our second catalog just in time for the holidays! We have worked hard to highlight great new gift items, bring in new product selections from small family-owned businesses, offer more of your favorite product categories, and continue to keep our prices reasonable. Thank you to everyone who requested a copy and followed us through our first two editions.

Along with our first Christmas catalog came our first Christmas Memories contest. We received an outpouring of amazing photos shared by our readers which showcase some of their best Christmas Memories. It was heartwarming to see such great photos of days gone by. Thank you to everyone that submitted photos and shared their memories with us.

Dutch Country Kitchen Season 2!

The Christmas season is one of my favorite times of year because it’s all about celebrating the birth of Christ and spending time with family... and good food! This year we were also able to launch new episodes of Dutch Country Kitchen which included new holiday entertaining recipes and tips from our hosts Billboard charting recording artist, Diana Upton-Hill, and my wife, Erica (who is also expecting our 5th child in April!). The Dutch Country Kitchen cooking show continues to grow and thrive and we truly enjoy sharing our traditional recipes with you all. We believe that breaking bread together as family and friends around the table is a valuable experience for everyone.

Blessed with Continued Growth

We continue to ship products across the nation now more than ever, which include many of our new lines of products launched in 2020. A few of which include Elmwood Inn Teas, Whiskey Boat Goods Candles, and Ohio Stoneware. Our partnerships with these small, family-owned companies are very important to us and we’ll be doing more of them in the coming years. We were also happy to be able to add more products from our storefronts to our website such as puzzles and home decor. All of our great customers, both in-store and online, are truly a blessing to us.

For us, it’s never about just selling things, it’s about helping you create memories in special times! We are humbled to earn your business and we can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store!

We are excited to be able to bring you Dutch Country Kitchen Holiday Entertaining Special, Season 2 and just in time for the holidays! Host, Diana Upton-Hill, and my wife, Erica, have had so much fun working on this new season full of delicious homemade recipes from our friends and family. We are especially happy to bring you our Holiday Entertaining Special featuring special guest Jill Kerns from Piper’s Candy out of Chariton, Iowa.

In this episode, we highlight some great ideas for holiday entertaining for friends and family, big or small. Food and family always seem to go together, don’t they? Especially during the holidays! When we sat down and thought about what recipes to showcase for season 2, we knew we had to do a Holiday or Christmas special since it is our favorite time of year. These are simple yet satisfying dishes anyone can make and everyone will enjoy!

Something Spiced, Savory, and Sweet!

Our first recipe to kick off the festivities is Diana’s Spiced Cider Drink. This is a special recipe handed down to Diana. It was so delicious even our video crew couldn’t stop drinking it! Did I mention only 4 ingredients go into this holiday treat?

What is holiday entertaining without a platter? I don’t think we have ever not had one at our house for Christmas. This “savory and a little sweet” platter has something for everyone: Winesburg Meats Grand Champion Summer Sausage, cheese curds, fruit, Dutch Country Cucumber Dill dip, and Wheat Crackers! Our girls can’t get enough of local Milton Creamery cheese curds, so these are always included in our platters when Erica thoughtfully puts one together. If you stop down at one of our store locations, Bloomfield or Hannibal, you can always sample the Jake & Amos Sweet & Hot Pepper Relish dip. Once you do, I think you will know why it has become one of our favorites too.

We are very humbled to have Jill from Piper’s Candy join us as a special guest and share some of her tips and tricks on dipping caramels and pretzels during the holidays! We love Jill - she also visits our stores to offer chocolate demonstrations from time-to-time - like her most recent one to celebrate the season at our Bloomfield location on December 5th. If you haven't tried her candy yet, we highly recommend you do! You can grab a box of her delectable hand-dipped chocolates here on our website and have them delivered right to your door! Bloomfield 8th Anniversary & Hannibal Grand Opening

Over the past weekend, Dutch Country General Store humbly celebrated our Bloomfield 8th Anniversary & Hannibal Grand Opening! It was a swell occasion for all involved! We are so thankful for everyone who came out to celebrate with us at both stores and we hope you all enjoyed the festivities.

At our Bloomfield store we celebrated October 2nd and 3rd with barnbuster deals, make it with pumpkin baking contest, live music and so much more! We offered Grand Marceline Coffee and Cocoa tasting and as always FREE  ice cream. We had special samples and just for the celebration also Hershey's Honey sticks! Let's not forget the FREE cinnamon rolls too!

You may have seen Tom Shadonix playing the Fiddle on Saturday for patrons and employees, he sounded great and it sure was fun.

For the past few years now we have also offered our "Apple Slingshot" which is always a hit with the kiddos. Some might even say it can get competitive! We continued our tradition this year!

A big thank you to our judges for the Make it with Pumpkin baking contest! We sure tasted some delicious treats and handed out some gift cards to the store, thank you to everyone who participated.

We were also so honored to give a donation to Wreaths Across America for wreaths for fallen veterans.

The Grand Opening of the Hannibal Store

We can not thank the Hannibal community enough for everyone who came out for our official Grand Opening! There was live music, Make it with Pumpkin baking contest, live chocolate dipping demo from Piper's Candy, FREE pie, and as with our Bloomfield location FREE coffee, and ice cream! We enjoyed traditional songs and tunes of America and the British Isles by Jake Book!

We had a tractor parade courtesy of the NROI Club. It was fun for all!

The Hannibal Trolley Company partnered with us to give free trolley rides to the public which was great since Saturday we had some rain for a good part of the day.

On Saturday we also presented Great River Honor Flight with a $1,200 donation.

Some of my great-great uncle's actually fought in World War Two, served in World War Two and they all came home alive, so we're all thrilled to be able to do this with the Honor Flight. This donation will be enough to send two veterans and their chaperones on the Honor Flight when it resumes.

We are especially grateful to the community for coming out to celebrate with us and take part in the ribbon-cutting and yes, that's Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher!"

I could go on and on about all of the fun activities we shared with customers and friends at both of our locations! Can't wait to do it all again next year, and it will be the 1st Anniversary for the Hannibal Store, see you real soon!

We are now accepting entries for our Christmas photo contest! (Yes, it is only September, but Christmas is just around the corner!) Here at Dutch Country General Store we are already in the Christmas spirit while assembling our very first Christmas Catalog... but we need your help!  We realize this is the perfect time to ask you  - our customers - for photos that capture your favorite holiday moments from bygone days, or even recent moments you have shared with loved ones. The photos just might be featured in our upcoming catalog!

Now's The Time To Dig Up Those Treasured Family Photos!

Submit your favorite, original “Christmas Memories” photo for a chance to be featured in our upcoming Christmas catalog and/or among our in-store holiday displays! Entrants selected will ALSO receive a $10 gift code to use at dutchcountrygeneralstore.com or on your next catalog order.

Just announced: the panel of judges will be selecting a Grand Prize winner, who will receive a $100 gift code!

The subject of the photos must be related to the Christmas season and of a family-friendly nature. Some examples might include: a fond holiday tradition from bygone days; your son or daughter playing with your father’s favorite childhood toy; or perhaps a cherished gift you received just recently from Dutch Country General Store. It’s the Little Things (Even In A Pandemic)

Optimism is Contagious...

In the last several months things have gotten a little wild in the world. I'm sure you've noticed! It's important to see the big picture and not hide your head in the sand, I don't like to let most anything get me down. They say I'm an optimist... sometimes to a fault. But as a business owner during this pandemic, I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have a sense of hope. There are new challenges every day! Getting to serve our wonderful customers (including many new faces all over the country!) in the last several months keeps bringing a smile to my face every day.

A First Time for Everything

We've gotten notes about how much our products have brought families together, which is so very important in these trying times. Whether it's the recently laid off single dad using our yeast to take his first stab at baking bread for the first time out in New Jersey, or the "usually too busy" family that just discovered how much fun it can be to sit down together and put a puzzle together.

These are the reasons we have kept working so hard, often almost around the clock. We've hired more people in our warehouse and our customer service department. We've done everything we can to make sure you get what you need to make your "at home" time the best it can be.

It's the Little Things...

That said, what I'm noticing from our customers and even our staff, is that they are telling me about the little things they are finding new joy in. You see, it's not always about the big and exciting things, but it's about the simple little things that truly make life more complete. I like to think that is what Dutch Country General Store is all about.

The little things. The little things that make life simply better. Whether it's the homemade Mrs. Miller's jam you put on your toast in the morning, the special Whiskey Boat Goods Candle with a scent that brings back fond memories, or that toy from your childhood that's just too perfect not to share with the next generation.  These are the little things. Celebrating them with the ones you care for, the ones you love can make all the difference.

Dutch Country General Store Donation

CINNAMON ROLLS FOR THE KIDS

Last week we had the great pleasure of donating 300 of our FRESH BAKED CINNAMON ROLLS to the Buddy Pack Program for the Hannibal Alliance for Youth Success and Hannibal Public School District #60. The Buddy Pack Program feeds tons of kids everyday throughout the Hannibal, Missouri area and is very much needed, especially in times like these. There are many programs like it throughout the country. Probably a few in your neck of the woods, too.

During these crazy times we really need to focus on doing what we can for each other - big or small - everything (and everyone) can make a difference. There is no limit on how much we should "love thy neighbor" and we try to live by that rule everyday at Dutch Country General Store. What so many of us take for granted is the ability to eat a decent meal. (If you have had the privilege of eating my wife's cooking it's always a great meal!) But, so many kids out there don't always get a good meal, let alone a treat like a homemade style cinnamon roll. You probably know that we are almost famous for our selection of fresh baked items in our stores - pies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, breads, and more. We know the joy a happy, full belly can bring to folks and we wanted to share some of that joy with the kids.

I encourage you, now and always, count your blessings and see what you can do for your neighbors. Lend an ear, lend a hand, lend a dollar, or even a loaf of bread. It doesn't take much to make a big impact.

A Note From Levi Regarding the Coronavirus Outbreak

Dear Friends, With news of the Coronavirus, we, at Dutch Country General Store would like to let you know that we are implementing some enhanced measures to ensure your safety, and the safety of our team, while still providing the service and products you have come to know us for. With that in mind, we wanted to update you on the actions we have taken in response to the outbreak. Here’s what we’re doing: • We’ve enhanced our already robust cleaning techniques of all areas, including not only customer areas, but also our warehouse, packaging room, ice cream and coffee area, and deli areas. We are also cleaning our facilities frequently with recommended sanitizing products and encouraging all employees to have increased vigilance about frequent hand washing. • While we are known for our wide variety of free food samples in store, we are suspending this practice until further notice. GRATEFUL FOR GROWTH: DUTCH COUNTRY GENERAL STORE TO OPEN LOCATION IN HANNIBAL, MISSOURI

2019 has been an exciting year, and this final month on the calendar is proving to be the icing on the cake. Not only do we get to celebrate the birth of Christ, but we also get to announce that a second location for Dutch Country General Store will be opening in “America’s Hometown”, Hannibal, Missouri in Spring 2020. 

If you haven’t been to Hannibal, Missouri I highly suggest you take your family (or your pretty girl) down there for a visit! We looked all around the midwest for places to open another store, and I’ve got to tell you that Hannibal stood out loud and proud. We will be located in the historic downtown, but in all honesty, the whole town is pretty historic. 

Being the home of Mark Twain (who is almost as funny as me) is what they are most famous for down there. You know, he’s the guy that wrote the stories about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn? Turns out those stories and characters are all based on people and places in Hannibal and the adventures Mark Twain had when he was growing up there along the banks of the Mississippi! Back then his name was Samuel Clemens. Someday I’ll tell you how he decided to change his name, but that’s for another day. Anyway… they also have caves, riverboats, haunted historic mansions and more.  And in Spring 2020 they will have their very own Dutch Country General Store!

We have been very blessed to continue to grow and expand this year. Our new cooking show, Dutch Country Kitchen, has become very popular. Looks like my wife, Erica, and her friend and co-host Diana Upton-Hill, may be back in 2020 with more recipes. Our website continues to grow as we have added many, many new products that all have my stamp of approval! We are shipping products all over the place to every state you can imagine! We also made the INC5000 List of Fastest Growing Companies again this year! And now we have announced a new store coming soon. There is just so much to thank God for.  

And I want to thank you, all our great new friends (and the old ones, too) that we meet in-store and online every day! You are a blessing to us and we are thankful for your business. We look forward to seeing you again in 2020 online or in our stores in Bloomfield, Iowa and Hannibal, Missouri! Stop by and see us real soon!

Hard Work and Persistence Really Does Pay

Dutch Country Living Lands Spot on Inc. Magazine’s List of Fastest-Growing Private Companies - the Inc. 5000

A couple months back I got an email that was humbling and also exciting.  It was from the editor of INC Magazine, letting us know that we had been selected to be on their 2018 list of the 5,000 fastest growing companies in the United States. There is only 1 other retail company in Iowa on the list.  I was blown away! So many great companies have been on the list in the past including Microsoft, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, Timberland, Yelp, to name a few.

Many people don’t know that Dutch Country Living is the parent company that runs Dutch Country General Store, Amish Made Poly & Poly Furniture USA, and is headquartered right here in rural Davis County, Iowa. My wife, Erica, and I run the company with the help of our amazing team including managers Brenda and Jack.

In 2012, when I was all of 21(and a little crazy… ok I still am) I took over the reins at Dutch Country General Store, which was in some rough territory at the time. Since then, we’ve been able to grow the retail location about 250% or so.  It’s a huge blessing to be able to do what we do. Trust me when I say I never thought, growing up on my dad’s dairy farm in Virginia, that I’d end up an entrepreneur. We focus on delivering a great experience through all our brands, both in the store and online, and delivering authentic Mennonite and Amish made products throughout. That’s what makes us special, I think.

Our store, just outside of Bloomfield, Iowa, is a popular tourist stop. On any given day about 75% of the cars in our parking lot are from out of town, and many out of state.  People seem to love our Amish wood furniture, bulk foods, candy, candles, heirloom quilts, fabrics, wooden toys, jar goods, and more. They come back over and over and they shop online at the website from wherever they live.  We ship orders all over the country every week!

In 2016 we started Amish Made Poly, a poly furniture company.  Right away we experienced huge growth and it continues to double in size every year.  Still, we try so hard to remain true to authentic Amish roots. Our poly furniture (adirondack chairs, rockers, gliders, swings, etc) is not made in a big factory somewhere; it’s made in small shops on Amish farms using the same traditions of quality building that they’ve been using for hundreds of years. Sure, the material is now recycled poly, rather than wood, but the tradition of fine craftsmanship remains the same.

All in all we are so thankful to our customers, to YOU, for all your support and love of our products.  We try our very hardest everyday to deliver great service and quality items we can stand behind. Without you we could have never made the Inc.5000 list for 2018, so THANK YOU!
